WRITE A 750-900 WORD ESSAY ON ONE OF THE FOLLOWING TOPICS:
1. Compare and contrast some of the assigned poems from the Week 7 readings or the poet you selected for Part 1 of Forum 7. You may compare poems from a single poet, or compare poems across poets. Have a debatable, persuasive claim and focus on specific points of comparison, using the Week 7 lecture in Lessons to guide your structure.
Stephen Ratcliffe is the poet I chose.
2. View the list of American Essayists. Select an essayist who wrote after the Civil War (note, the list includes some pre-Civil War essayists. Do not select a pre-Civil War essayist). Do not select an author you already wrote on for Essays 1 or 2. Search the Internet for an essay by your selected author and read it. Compose a thesis-driven analysis based on your own original observations. Cite the essay as you would any article on the Internet as you examine your points of evidence. NOTE: The essay you locate from the Internet is your primary source. Any additional secondary sources that you research must come from the APUS library
Martin Luther King, Jr. “Iâ€ve Been to the Mountain Topâ€
3. Write a critical analysis of one of the assigned works of literature from Weeks 6, 7 or 8.
Larry Levis “To a Wren on Calvary†Attached
Citation: Levis, Larry. The Widening Spell of the Leaves. University of Pittsburgh Press, 1991. Pitt Poetry Series. EBSCOhost, search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=nlebk&AN=829405&site=ehost-live&scope=site.
There is a 5-paragraph minimum requirement (an introduction w/ thesis, 3 or more body paragraphs, and a conclusion). Format in MLA style. Cite sources, both in-text and on the Works Cited page. The word count does not include formatting or Works Cited entries. Write in 3rd person. Avoid 1st person (I, we, our, etc.) and 2nd person (you, your).
In the upper left-hand corner, list your name, instructorâ€s name, course name and due date. Include a title. Double space lines and use one-inch margins around the paper. Use 12 Times New Roman font. Align left. Indent each paragraph 5 spaces. When quoting literature, research MLA citation standards for short stories, plays or poems.
All secondary sources must come from APUS library. Open web sources are not permitted. Do not create a “cut and paste” paper of information from various sources. Your ideas must be new and freshly constructed. Take great care not to plagiarize.
For all topics, create a debatable thesis (a thesis isnâ€t a fact, quote, or question). State your position on the topic. Present a new perspective on the assigned literature based on original observations.
Since the reader knows the story, avoid summary. Instead, focus on specific story elements that support your thesis.
